Bellville was originally called "12 Mile Post" — exactly 12 miles from Cape Town city centre. Weary travellers on ox-drawn carts used it as a rest stop on the journey inland. The original bluestone 12th milestone still stands on Durban Road near Elizabeth Park.

- Wait until evening: Collection trucks can run late. Only report a missed bin after 21:00 on your scheduled collection day, or the next morning.
- Keep it out: Leave your uncollected bin on the pavement edge so the backup team can access it when they arrive.
